Denise Scott Brown
Denise Scott Brown, born on October 3, 1931, in Nkana, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), is an influential architect, urban planner, educator, and writer. After studying in South Africa and England, she earned graduate degrees in architecture and planning from the University of Pennsylvania. She taught at Penn and other major universities and became a partner in the firm Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates. Her co-authored book Learning from Las Vegas (1977) challenged traditional ideas in architecture. Scott Brown has been a vocal advocate for women in architecture, addressing gender biases in her essay "Room at the Top? Sexism and the Star System in Architecture." In recognition of her impact in architectural theory, education and practice, she has garnered numerous accolades.
