Genevieve Blatt

Hon. Genevieve Blatt was born on June 19, 1913, in East Brady, Pennsylvania. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics and a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Early in her career, she worked as assistant city solicitor and civil service examiner in Pittsburgh. In 1954, Blatt became the first woman elected to statewide office in Pennsylvania when she was chosen as Secretary of Internal Affairs. Later, she served as a judge on the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court from 1972 to 1993. Her most notable legal decision enforced Title IX, requiring equal sports opportunities for girls. She died on July 4, 1996, in Hampden Township, Pennsylvania.
